kayak carrier 450 Apr 07, 2009

I ordered the pacific outdoors steel kayak and canoe carrier, model 17-CC 450. Overall the kayak carrier seems to be excellent and I think it will work out very well for me ( I live in the north and there is still snow on the ground right now). But, there are 2 things right off that I feel need to be changed about this carrier. First, the quick release thumb lever on the air pump is too long and does not fit past the spokes in the wheel unless bending the valve stem in an odd position, which could cause damage to the inner tube (fortunately, I had a bicycle pump that I used to pump up the tires ). The hand pump included with this carrier is really bad. Second, the kick stand need to be designed differently. It really does not stop the carrier from moving when loading the kayak.
I have a sit on top kayak, and it works much better to set the carrier along side of the kayak, using the kick stand to keep it upright, about in the seat area, and them pick up the front of your kayak and load it on the carrier and then go around and lift up the back of the kayak to get it centered.
How about including wheel chucks to keep the carrier from rolling when loading the kayak. That would work much better.

well made, but... Sep 01, 2009

The carrier is very well made, but... My first problem is the keel on my canoe is too deep and prevents the canoe from sitting securely on the hull supports. The keel bottoms out on the tubing causing it to rock side to side. The hull supports need to be a larger diameter to accommodate the keel. Someone else mentioned the air pump is not worth the bother, I agree. Finally, a bit `nit-picky', the `Two adjustable tie down straps included' are not two sets of straps as someone might imagine but one adjustable strap set. One strap has a hook on one end. The other strap has a hook on one end and a buckle on the other. Thread the end of one strap through the buckle to secure the canoe. I count that as `One adjustable strap', not two.

Great product and works well in rough areas. Sep 12, 2009

Good product works great. I have a 17 ft Old town canoe and this thing moves it around with no problem with all my stuff in it, elec motor, bat, rods, seats etc,. You'll find that you'll need extra tie downs but that is no biggy.

Love my toy!! Oct 11, 2009
By John A. Wells Too bad it doesn't quite fit my kayak. I have a Wilderness Systems Ride 135, so the pontoon bottom doesn't sit flush on this, but it gets the job done. I have a quarter-mile hike to my favorite lake and the kayak gets heavy carrying it.

Good May 04, 2009
By Samuel A. Karlin Works welll. Dimensions could have been more clear as it is a little small for some canoes.
